People who read this junk tip regular know that I am really interested in photoshop magic. Today I found a little film/commercial on YouTube by Dove that shows the transformation of a model–being made-up, photographed, photochopped, and then put on a billboard for the idolators.
It made it more clear to me why people in magazines can look sort of like themselves…but not quite right. I know this is a dumb ol’ sci-fi idea, but why don’t they just cgi-up some babes, and then they don’t have to worry about models not showing up?
A friend in grad school had a sister who was a top model. The friend would bring in magazines featuring her sister, but then would have to point her out, because she was usually unrecognizable as the same person from ad to article to ad.
I was thinking about that in the shower this morning, and I think there might be a couple of reasons companies–particularly companies that sell based on personal appearance–don’t use completely CG models. Firstly, there’s recognition: we don’t have the technology to create a completely CG movie star that doesn’t look like ass, so if you want to sell based on star power (Revlon’s campaign with Julianne Moore, Susan Sarandon, and Halle Berry, for example), you’re stuck with a real person as a base for the picture.
But more importantly than that, makeup and clothing companies are selling the idea that, if you buy their product, you can look like the model in the picture. That sweater will make you look *that* leggy. That foundation will make your skin look *that* clear (under any light). If they used CG models, and people knew they were using CG models, people would feel that they had no idea what the product would really if they bought it. It’s just as true now, but not in a way we the consumers are aware of, at least not for the most part, and certainly not to the massive extent that it’s the case.
