Friday Fricassee

humorous pictures
see more my blogher article on grammar poleezes. I typoed in the first sentence, so I hope someone will get a kick out of that. But I don’t have to tell you that. You saw what I did thur. Also, I accidentally misspelled fascists in the title, but I fixed it. Stay classy, me. FINGER GUNS.

Also last week I wrote a smarmy article about corporate greeneryization, which no one commented on. Probably I misspelled something in that entry, too.

Lately I have been a half-awake homophone abuser, you know?

  1. OK, what is UP w/ people not commenting on our favorite blogger’s site(s). Well, I for one am gonna give some love–I read both your most recent pieces on blogher, and enjoyed them both. As an English teacher, I gotta say I get regularly freaked out by trends downward in our language–and I am no linguistic purist. However, I GET, HUGELY get, that the words we use are merely metaphors for meaning, and that our urgency is ever to be understood, “gotten,” as closely as we are able to fashion and frame those slippery things to position that message for receipt by Other. I was so bothered early in my career by kids (and adults) writing/saying “once in THE while” for “once in A while.” Now I hardly blink. But I still TWITCH when kids use “out of BOUNCE” for “out of BOUNDS” and “my NEXT STORE NEIGHBOR” for…well, you get it. Ten years ago, they would look at me in wonder when I pointed out the error; now they argue with me–I’M the one who’s wrong…If we all start using completely different metaphors, how will meaning ever be made?!

  2. sj,
this is in repsonse to “the assmangler pt 1”.
I didnt know if you read past comments, so i thought i’d post it on your most recent post.

ever listen to The Dresden Dolls?
    they are the bomb.
but anyways, they have this song called “Bad Habit”, and it’s about the lead singers (Amanda Palmer- sexiest woman alive), ‘bad habit’ of picking at her fingers until they bleed. It even mentions mittens in the summertime!

I just really love that band and it reminded me of your story :)

  3. About the corporate greening: I think that green is the new flag. You know what I mean?
