If there was a problem YO I’ll solve it (check out the hook while my DJ revolves it)

Wow, it got nice all of a sudden. See, if I had the internet in my arm, as is my dream, I could be internetting outside. But no, so Hester Prynne and I are but casual acquaintances. I did just get some fun editing work for a couple of days. I was afraid I was going to be all rusty, but I snapped right into it. It was so fun. I get the same feeling editing text as I used to get looking at van Goghs. Is this a sickness? It feels like love. I want more. I hope it’s out there for me in September when I march off to an office job of some sort. My dream is to be given large documents with many problems that need to be turned around very quickly. I really do have dreams about that, finding comma splices. HOW SAD.

So, what the hell is going on here?

A. I have to find new hosting, so I am working on that. Because of happenstance, etc, I have never paid for hosting, but now I will stop being a hosting ho ho ho. I was dreading it so much I was thinking I would just stop writing my website, because I hate MT and dealing with this shit. I could go back to diaryland. You can’t stop me.

B. Doot doot doot doot doo…It’s Domestic!

Pumpkin starts. These will go up on the garage roof.

Nearby are the tomato starts, which were purchased at the edible plant sale at the front of this month. I didn’t know they could stay in their wee buckets for this long.

The cucumbers are outside in cloches, and by cloches I mean all we were allowed to drink for two weeks was large bottles of Talking Rain.

Also, the coop is coming along. It is actually further along than this:

But this is the newest picture I have. It’s going to be four feet by four feet and eighteen inches off the ground. We have it framed out and tonight we will put in the floor and broody box, I hope. I showed it to my friend JB today and he said his experience with chickens was with big old meat birds. We were talking about the stuff people do around here, me included, to make the “urban microfarm.” I love that phrase.

Yesterday I picked up my second and last batch of chickens for the spring. I now have two Silkies and a Polish (I was inspired, KQ). I was going to just pick up two, one to replace my rooster and one for insurance policy, but these birds were straight run, so bets, watch me hedge them. I did a little wing-spotting, but feather sexing is a dicey game. ALTHOUGH five years ago I picked all pullets with my ghetto eyeballing, so we shall see. I have a soft spot for Silkies, so I hope they are both pullets.

I wrote a piece a bit ago on the mudflap girl here and at Blogher, and what do I see yesterday?

Irony? An alternative for bear truck drivers? I dunno. I like it.

  1. i’m wildly jealous of your chickies. it’s smart to make a microfarm and those pesky dumb suburban housing authorities need to get with the program. :D

  2. I have recently started using, and liking, Dreamhost (dreamhost.com) for hosting. They include one-click installations of a bunch of stuff, not including MT, but including WordPress, which imports from MT very easily. Or you could do your own installation of MT, I am sure.

Our cloches are made of Old Crow bourbon bottles. Pure class out here, let me tell you.

  3. In NZ, we don’t even have to plant the pumpkin seeds. I didn’t weed under my kitchen window for a while, yanno, a couple of months or so….

Anyway, I went out one day to discover the compost must have had some pumpkin seeds in it and I had a pumpkin patch. I did manage get one nice big fresh pumpkin out of my flower garden in the end, though I totalled a couple of other possibles by weeding the wrong bits. (Your doing it wrong!)

My rats adored the fresh seeds straight from the garden to their dinner plate. :D

  4. I use lunarpages, and am part of their affiliate program so if you go through them I’ll get a lovely kickback. http://www.lunarpages.com/id/brigidkeely

I’d recommend them even if I got nothing out of the deal, though, and have been for 5 or 6 years.

They have tremendous uptime, a great deal of storage space, one-click installation of a lot of different programs (an SMF forum, galleries, content management systems, wikis) and blogging platforms (including wordpress), it’s easy to reach real people for help by phone or email, etc. It’s less than $100 a year and you get a huge amount of stuff.

  5. CHeck out Typepad. For about the same amount you’d pay for a year of hosting you can use Typepad (the same folks who created MT) which is a lot like using MT without all the bullshit. I’ve been using Typepad now for 4 years. http://www.typepad.com.

  6. Thanks…I know what’s out there. I just like to complain about MT. I’ll switch to something. And now I have hosting again! Complain and ye shall receive.

  7. I am paralyzed by technological terror. I don’t even want to if there are better hosting/blogging options because then I would have to get off my lazy virtual butt and figure out how to use them.

Nice Vanilla Ice reference by the way. I was just saying it’s about time he had a career resurgence. But I think he keeps getting arrested instead.

  8. Hey, thanks for the shout out. I’ll have to let my mom know you were inspired. I think sometimes about getting some sweet little chicks while I’m reading your blog but then I remember the two kids, four cats, two dogs and the fact that oh yeah, I don’t want any more responsibilities.
